Project outcomes.

The Nikkei Archives Project has been successful in achieving great renewed interest around the archive, promoting archival literacy, and mobilizing community members through creative and community based projects.

workshops

Archival Literacy workshops in the summer and fall of 2024 gave Japanese Canadians in Montreal the tools to access the JCCCM archives at McGill University.

Community Archiving Team
+ Digital Catalogue

We’ve assembled an intergenerational team of Nikkei community archivists who have been working since summer 2024 to review and catalogue the Collection. The result is a still-evolving comprehensive and accessible digital catalogue, available for consultation  here. The project has also allowed young Japanese Canadians to develop research skills, critical thinking methodologies, and a chance to explore and develop their own artistic projects in response to archival documents.

Digitizing
+ Capacity Building

In addition to the digital catalogue, we’ve begun the process of digitizing portions of the Collection, which will soon be available for viewing and download from the McGill University Archives website. We have also equipped the team with the necessary equipment to digitize text documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials in the archive.

Next steps.

We are seeking additional funding to continue digitizing the contents of the Collection. Other future goals include developing more online resources for learning through the community archives, hosting community scanning days at the JCCCM, and continuing to mobilize the knowledge held in the Collection through presentations and other projects.
